QR ordering only works if the code scans first time and keeps working. Here is how to print, place and protect your table codes.
QR ordering lives or dies on a physical object sitting on a table. Get the printing and placement right and it works quietly for years. Get it wrong and staff spend the evening apologising.
First: make sure the code cannot die
Before printing anything, confirm your codes point at a page on a domain you own. Codes generated by free tools often route through the tool's own redirect - and if that service stops or your trial ends, every printed code in the building stops working at once. We wrote about that here, because it happens more than it should.
Printing that scans first time
- Size: aim for at least 3cm across on a table stand. Smaller works on paper but fails in low light.
- Contrast: dark code on a light background. Clever colour combinations are the most common cause of failed scans.
- Quiet zone: leave clear white space around the code. Do not crowd it with a logo.
- Finish: matte beats gloss. Glossy laminate reflects overhead lights straight into the camera.
- Test properly: scan the printed version, in your actual lighting, on a cheap phone as well as a new one.
Placement
Table stands work better than stickers - they stay clean, survive wiping, and can be replaced individually. Put them where a seated guest can scan without picking anything up. Add a short line of text: people need to be told what the code does. Scan to see the menu and order outperforms a bare code every time.
Practical extras
Print a few spares - stands get knocked, taken and damaged. Number them if you want orders tied to a specific table. And keep the artwork file, so reprinting does not mean regenerating codes.
What good looks like
A guest sits down, scans without asking anyone, browses a menu with photos, orders, and pays from their phone. Your staff do less running and your tables turn faster - and none of it works if the code is 2cm, glossy and pointing at a dead redirect.
